Mongolian-born, German-raised filmmaker Uisenma Borchuinjects her own identity and experiences into a sensuous and intriguing sophomore feature about the clash of cultures and gender roles on the Mongolian steppes. The director herself plays Wessi, who returns to her homeland after years abroad to see her married sister Ossi. The independent-minded Wessi’s breaking of patriarchal tribal norms and unabashed attraction to a mysterious older man both alarms and awakens Ossi, who grew up in a wholly different world. Stunning vistas of nomadic life in the Gobi Desert backdrop this intimate, lyrical portrait of female bonding, sexuality and empowerment.
