"God doesn't exist in an age of change." Marat works as a personal chauffeur for a famous mathematician in Almaty. While picking up his wife and newborn baby, he crashes into a Mercedes and has to pay for the damage. With no other option, he borrows money from the mafia, leading him into a cycle of loans and crimes. Darezhan Omirbayev is considered one of the essential auteurs since the Kazakh New Wave. Inspired by Bresson and film noir, with his minimalist aesthetic, Omirbayev tells a story of struggles and moral dilemmas amid the social upheaval in the post-Soviet era.
