During the waning days of Dutch colonial control of the DutchEast Indies (a.k.a. Indonesia), Dutch sugar plantation owner Jan dies after visiting his mistress, who is also the family’s domestic servant. When Jan’s son Cornelius and his pregnant wife arrive at the remote island to take over the estate, a shocking revelation leads to chaos and brutality. A darkly funny, visually striking, and stinging indictment of colonialism and the various forms of violence it creates, the film starts as a bewitching depiction of the jungle before descending into a surreal fever dream.
