Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes takes a beguiling and otherworldly sojourn in this globe-hopping experimental travelogue that’s already being hailed as one of the filmmaker’s best. Conceived during Gomes’ trip across Asia with cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, the film mixes time periods, styles and even colours to create a giddy ode to cinema. The action begins in 1918 in Burma, where British civil servant Edward waits for his fiancée Molly to join him so they can get married. When Edward suddenly gets cold feet, he makes an epic escape, hopping from one Asia country to another – with Molly right on his trail.
