Tsukiko gets a shock one night when her mother Yoko comes home drunk with Kenji, a much younger man. However, that’s nothing compared to what Yoko tells her the next morning: Yoko is marrying Kenji, and he is moving in immediately. Although Kenji’s dopey but genuine personality slowly wins her over, Tsukiko still hopes Yoko will choose the mature local doctor. Based on the novel by Sakuno Tsukine, Mipo O’s second directorial effort transcends its seemingly sitcom-esque premise by balancing its characters’ goofy charm with a poignant depiction of a loving and unusual mother-daughter relationship.
