Talk: Yamagata Film – 32 Years, 24 Frames, One Truth

HKAFF first collaboration with the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, showing a selection of documentaries which have graced Yamagata screens during the past 18 years. Curator and member of the YIDFF board of directors, Asako Fujioka, shared the history, mission and influence of the film festival after the screening of Storytellers.

Even though documentary film festivals gain less attention than general film festivals, this does not hinder YIDFF from being one of the most renowned events of its kind. The “New Asia Trend” section provides a platform for young Asian documentary filmmakers to present their work. To emphasize the interaction between documentary filmmakers and the locals, YIDFF allows the locals to be the judges. Due to the pandemic, this year’s festival can only be held online, which made human interaction almost impossible. However, Fujioka thinks that moving online can break geographical boundaries and spread excellent works all over the world.
