Tom Lin, director of Yen and Ai-Lee, is back to HKAFF after screening The Garden of Evening Mists in 2019!
Lin agreed with the moderator's observation that the film is especially suited for the big screen, revealing that he decided to shoot the film in black-and-white early on in the process. He invited Hongkonger Karen Yip for the film's costume design, emphasizing on the use of various shades of gray.
An audience member was surprised at the casting of Tseng Kuo-cheng in the film. As Tseng is a Hakka person from Pingtung, Lin stated that he was well-suited for the role of a middle-aged Hakka person. Yet, as Tseng’s character is a far cry from Tseng’s own positive image, Lin initially did not expect that Tseng would agree to take on the role.
With the post-screening Q&A ending in a sea of applause, we would like to wish Yen and Ai-Lee all the best at the upcoming Golden Horse Awards.
