21st HKAFF Closing Ceremony!

Organised by the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival Society and in association with Broadway Cinematheque, the 21st Hong Kong Asian Film Festival (HKAFF) held its Closing Ceremony at PREMIERE ELEMENTS, with the attendance of festival director Didi Wu, HKAFF Ambassador Racel Leung, director of the Closing Film Daughter's Daughter Huang Xi, actors Sylvia Chang, Karena Lam, Eugenie Liu and director of Papa Philip Yung, actors Sean Lau, Jo Koo, Dylan So, Lainey Hung.

In the post-screening sharing session, Huang Xi, the director of Daughter's Daughter, said that preparations for the film started six years before the start of shooting, so a certain consensus had been established on the artistic direction and coordination of the cast, and therefore during the filming, she was already appreciating the excellent performances of the actors, which she herself had enjoyed quite a lot. When asked how she prepared for her role, three-time Golden Horse Film Queen Sylvia Chang said, ‘I used more than 70 years of my life experience to prepare for my role, and I am grateful to the director, Huang Xi, for trusting me to handle this complicated role. The director has given the actors the space to get into their roles without feeling like they are acting.' Karena Lam, who plays Chang's daughter, said, ‘I have known Sylvia for more than 20 years, but this is the first time we work together, and it feels very natural to work with Eugenie.’ Liu, who also also plays Chang's daughter, said, ‘I didn't know that I would be working with Sylvia and Karena when I agreed to perform in the film, but I was very surprised when I learnt that I would be working with them. I believe that love is equal everywhere and at all times, so I've been adjusting my mindset to best suit the character.'

Director Philip Yung and cast members of Papa, Sean Lau, Jo Koo, Dylan So, Lainey Hung and more shared their experiences of the filming of the film. Yung said that it was very difficult to make this film, and it required a lot of emotional input. Papa is a film full of love to him. Lau said he had read the script many times and was deeply touched every time. He said, ‘The script is very good, the director has spent lots of time on researching, and the text is full of the director's kindness. I can feel how the director looks at this matter between the lines. After I finished the film, I felt that time can be quite ruthless because it keeps passing by, but time can be kind from another perspective because it also does not stop, allowing people to get rid of their sorrow.' Koo said, ‘Apart from the acting skills of the actors, there are also a lot of sincere emotions in the film, so I hope that everyone can enjoy the film and pay attention to the details of the film.' As for the young actor So, who is acting in a film for the first time, he said, ‘I have drawn on the conflict between myself and my father, and I have tried to show this part of my feelings in the film, as we are not good at expressing ourselves.' Hung, who plays the younger sister in the film, laughed that she had a very good relationship with her family members in the film.

The two films about family relationships brought the 21st Hong Kong Asian Film Festival to a successful conclusion. Additional screenings are still available, grab your last chance to see some of the best Asian cinema in Hong Kong!
