This year's HKAFF Director in Focus Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit's latest work Human Resource, selected for the Venice Film Festival, has finally arrived in Hong Kong to meet audiences!
Nawapol stated that his creative journey usually starts with his own worries or concerns. Heart Attack, which marked its 10th anniversary this year, focuses on how one struggles to survive within the system. 10 years later, with the grace of aging, he begins to contemplate the meaning of nurturing the future generation. Hence, his new work welcomes a change in perspective, questioning the operations of corporations, governments, and even the world. He believes that with the gradual decline in global birth rate, the universal problem that raised out is one that all could resonate.
His previous work, Happy Old Year, emphasises the loneliness of social life. An audience member felt that the void in Human Resource seems to be more hallow. Nawapol noted that societal system exerts intangible pressure on people, most of the time unnoticed. Therefore, he tried to quiet down the scenes, positioning the characters as observers from aside. He believes people keep quite because the current situation seems "perfectly normal". However, once you hold the slightest sense of doubt against corporation or system, the subtle peculiarities lurking around become discernible within these quite, ordinary scenes.
