Japanese emerging director Yukari Sakamoto visited HKAFF with her debut feature White Flowers and Fruits.

Sakamoto shared that she wrote the script during corona. At the time, she was pondering what would happen if a girl commit suicide in an enclosed girls' college. She hopes that they film could prompt audience to contemplate when one choose to take one's own life, there is never a single reason, and it is risky to try to summarize the whole picture with a single answer. She told the audience that if they felt uncomfortable during watching, hoping to unveil the underlying cause, that is the goal of the film.

The story is set in a Christian school, the director also shared that she graduated from a Christian college. She shared that there aren't many Christians in Japan, but the number of Christian school is notable, especially in Tokyo. It is her longtime wish to present Christian school life through film.

The narrative is permeated with modern dance, a dance that put much emphasis on transformation according to Sakamoto. She hopes that something could reflect the inner feelings of the character, allowing her to express oneself, therefore employing dance to mirror the growth of Anna.

At last, an audience member asked about the choice of film title. Sakamoto revealed that the initial film title was White Flowers (白の花), symbolizing the damsels with white. Later, she realized that the girls in the film make different choices, embarking on different journeys, leading to different consequences, therefore, she renamed the film as White Flowers and Fruits (白の花実).
