The Hong Kong Asian Film Festival is committed to empowering the creative endeavours of young directors. Each year, it presents the New Talent Award to encourage emerging filmmakers across Asia to contribute to the film industry through independent and non-mainstream spirits.

The jury members of this year's New Talent Award include: Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards Best Actress Award winner Cecilia Choi, Jeonju IFF programmer Sung Moon, and film producer Shan Zuolong.
At last, the winner went to director Bian Zhuo of As the Water Flows. The jury remarked that "with a sophisticated and cohesive narrative and gentle approach, the film interweaves the volatile life of a traditional Chinese family with the endearing yet poignant characters interweave together, morphing into the eternal light of life that lingers. The director integrate traditional and fresh perspective to narrate a family history, embracing different generations, authentically reflect contemporary Chinese family dynamics, demonstrating new possibilities for Chinese cinema."
