Event Recap: "Delikado" Post-screening Sharing with Karl Malakunas

Director Karl Malakunas attended the post-screening sharing of Delikado and interacted with the audience! After leaving in Philippine for 8 years, he employed his personal experiences, connections and insider knowledge of the country to create his debut feature documentary, which was nominated for Outstanding Investigative Documentary at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards,

The documentary was born out of a tragedy. Malakunas was living in Manila at the time, and was planning to write an article about ecotourism in Palawa. He met an environmental activist who promised to show him around. However, days before the trip, the activist was shot to death due to publicly criticizing local corruption problems. At that moment, he realised that this was not merely an isolated incident, lots of environmental activists, general citizens of Palawa are risking their life to protect their homeland.

In the documentary, there are many scenes following the activists as they are protesting. Some audience were concerned whether the director was threatened and was curious about the impact of the documentary. Malakunas shared that he and the cinematographer followed the environmental activists as they were patrolling in the forest. Despite the risks that came with their acts, he believed it was insignificant comparing to the threats faced by the local residents on a daily basis. "We have the luxury of filming. Even if we stay there for several months, we could leave safely. However, they live in such environment every day. The most threatening risk resides out of the forest."

The director revealed that the governor at the time and his family remains prominent in the region. Fake news have been circulated, attempting to discredit the film and the team. Nonetheless, the general public showed positive support. He shared that he once held a large scale outdoor screening at Manila. Some unexpected guests attended, including the Director-General of Forestry at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The film offers a channel to support for the participants, amplifies the voice of the activists, and conveys the authentic situation deep in the forest to the world, prompting more attention and action to protect the forests.

At last, the director encouraged the audience to stay perseverant. "The key of the film lies in the testimony of the power of people. Despite being in an extremely disadvantaged situation, they never give up. We must not forget to keep going. With this in mind, we can persevere through countless hardship."
