Left-Handed Girl is the debut feature of director Tsou Shih-Ching. Tsou and co-writer Sean Baker, her long-time creative partner, stayed in Taiwan for a month, visited the night market and created the script. Tsou attended two post-screening talks to share with the audience her experiences.

Tsou shared that in order to capture the most authentic scenery of Taiwanese night markets, she went to the same noodles shop for consecutively two months and befriended the owner. Upon building trust, she was able to rent the shop and its tools for shooting.

Speaking of casting, Tsou joked that initially she wanted to cast her daughter. Unfortunately, among all the actors, her daughter was the most uncooperative one. At last, she picked Nina Ye. Tsou frankly shared that the mother in the film was an authentic yet unlikeable character, reflecting the hardship and love of life. The mother-daughter relationship portrayed also reflect common conflicts and resolve in Asian families.

Shot in iPhone, director stressed that the core of the film was a good story, shooting equipment and other post-production procedures were merely assistance. At last, she encouraged the audience that "creators need to protect their own story, not to be affected by others. As long as the story holds special meaning to you, there shall be resonance, you have to follow your inner thoughts and feelings of the audience."
