

Gamer Girls is the winner of the First Feature Film Initiative for the higher education institution group. Shot during the corona, the film finally welcomed its world premiere at HKAFF. Created by a 6-people CG/VFX team, the film integrates elements of gaming and fantasy. Director Veronica Bassetto revealed that they spent two years in editing, another two years in creating CG effects. There were more than 900 CG scenes in total, a "dream project" to her. The green prop guns were meticulously edited for the fight scene. Director was grateful to have the assistance of AI technology and the fervent spirit of the team, enabling post production to be completed in two years.
Upon watching the film, the actors shared that their passion was reignited. Ng Wing Sze was grateful to be able to work with the other four young actresses, and was more than delighted to be able to work with the two female directors and producer, a remarkable journey to her. From being curious about the final CG product to being able to witness it on big screen, she was deeply moved and hoped that audience could feel the same. Angela Yuen also shared that they shot the film in an extraordinarily passionate mode. Supportive friendship infused the film, witnessing the closer friendship and personal growth. Meanwhile, Sabrina Cheung recalled treasure moments during filming whereas Jamie noted that watching the final version in cinema held special meaning.
Dreamt of being a filmmaker since young, the director drew inspiration from the joy of gaming. She wanted to make a film that "combine girl power and fantasy", breaking the gender stereotypes of gaming. Due to insufficient budget, she could not afford cyberpunk effect for the whole film. Therefore, she utilised the “popping in and out” characteristics of gaming to construct the experience of these girls pursuing their dream in a cyber-world. The film also documents sceneries that no longer exist in recent years, evoking buried memories.
Some complimented the extravagant CG fighting scenes, remarked that the costume design reflected the distinctive personalities of the characters. The director responded that in the year of writing the script, she already had an idea of the casting, the characters and the actresses shared many similarities. Some audience also resonated with the characters who decide to embark on an unordinary journey, persevere and support one another, noting that the picture of a group of pure-heart people gathering together, pursuing their dreams were deeply moving. Speaking of the choice of shooting locations, the director emphasized that it must be shot in Hong Kong. She admired the marriage of new and traditions, and the coexistence of East and West in Hong Kong. Costume and art director Dorothy added that the whimsical, handcrafted aesthetic of the costumes formed the core of the film's visual identity, pieced together from everyday materials to create a distinctive look.
